    Short Itinerary

    Day 01: Cusco – Calca – Lares – Huacawasi

    Early departure from Cusco, visit to the Lares hot springs (optional), and finally hike to Huacawasi, our first camping site.

    Day 02: Huacawasi – Sacsallaulay Pass – Yanahuara

    After breakfast, we start the hike to reach the highest point of our route, Sacsallaulay Pass, and finally descend to Yanahuara, our second camping site.

    Day 03: Yanahuara – Ollantaytambo – Km104 – Inti Punku – Machu Picchu

    Early departure to transfer to Ollantaytambo to take the train to Km104 and start our hike, until we reach Inti Punku to have the first view of Machu Picchu. We then continue by bus to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a hotel.

    Day 04: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu Sanctuary – Cusco

    After an early breakfast, we take the bus to have a guided tour of the Machu Picchu citadel. Finally, we take the return train to Cusco.

    Itinerary

    TRAVEL ITINERARY

    Cusco (3,400 meters above sea level): Your day starts very early, the guide will pick you up at 6:00 am from your respective hotel, and we will head through the Sacred Valley to the town of Lares where our trek begins. Throughout this journey, we can enjoy the landscape and breathtaking mountain views, so it’s important to have your camera ready.

    Sacred Valley – Calca (2,920 meters above sea level): The journey takes us to the town of Calca, where we make a small detour to begin the ascent to the village of Lares, our starting point for the trek.

    Lares (3,150 meters above sea level): The journey takes about 3 hours. Once we arrive in the village, we will go up to the hot springs where we can relax and enjoy these beautiful open-air hot springs. Lunch is provided here.

    Our bus awaits us during this time, and then we continue our journey for about 20 minutes to the trailhead known as Pascana.

    Here we meet our porters and pack the horses and llamas. We are ready to start our hike through the mountains of the Sacred Valley for about 6 hours.

    This is a beautiful day filled with great scenery and the opportunity to visit several Andean villages, see their traditional attire, and experience the way of life of the Andean people in these areas.

    Huacawasi (3,800 meters above sea level): Once our hike is completed, we arrive at the small village of Huacawasi, where everything is ready for a delicious dinner and a good rest. It’s important to have the appropriate equipment as the nights are cold.

    Huacawasi (3,800 meters above sea level): Early in the morning, we will be greeted by local children in traditional clothing on their way to school. After a nutritious breakfast, we will start walking towards the highest point, Sacsayllaylay Pass.

    Sacsayllaylay (4,400 meters above sea level): The hike will take about 4 hours and will be a steep uphill climb. Of course, we will have an emergency horse accompanying us so that everyone will undoubtedly be able to reach the summit. During this hike, you will be able to enjoy huge mountains, a mosaic of farmlands, and breathtaking views. Please note that we will reach great heights and the weather can be very cold. After reaching the highest point, we will descend and make a visit to the lakes known as Aruraycocha and Yuraccocha, along with the Queuñas forest, where we will have our Andean lunch with beautiful views.

    Mantanay (3,850 meters above sea level): After a 2-hour hike, we will reach Mantanay, from where we will continue the downhill hike through a picturesque valley of Queunales with a great opportunity to take photographs of the Andean fauna and flora. Finally, we arrive at Yanahuara.

    Yanahuara (2,780 meters above sea level): This is a warm, welcoming town with a comfortable climate, located near the Urubamba Valley, where we will have our second night of camping.

    Yanahuara (2,780 meters above sea level): After an early breakfast, our transportation will take us to the Ollantaytambo train station to board the train.

    Ollantaytambo Station (2,870 meters above sea level): At this point, we will take the Expedition train to our starting point called KM 104 «Chacha bamba.»

    Km 104 Chacha bamba (2,100 meters above sea level): At the starting point, you have to show your Inca Trail permit, your original passport, and your ISIC card if you have one. This is where the Inca Trail begins, and we will start walking for 3.5 to 4 hours to Wiñayhuayna, where we will enjoy a good snack. The hike to Wiñayhuayna is a beautiful stroll, where we can enjoy the incredible flora and surrounding landscape.

    Inti Punku (2,700 meters above sea level): After lunch, we hike an additional two hours to Intipunku «Sun Gate,» from where we will have excellent views of Machu Picchu and all the surrounding mountains. Here we will have about 20 minutes to rest and contemplate the beautiful scenery.

    Machu Picchu (2,430 meters above sea level): Afterwards, we will transfer to the lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu.

    Aguas Calientes (2,040 meters above sea level): Later, we take a bus to Aguas Calientes and transfer to the hotel.

    We will arrive there between approximately 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, where we head to our hotel for a short rest, and then you can enjoy a delicious dinner at one of our suggested restaurants.

    Machu Picchu: On this final day, we will have breakfast at 5:00 a.m. at the hotel and then head to our bus that will take us to the Machu Picchu Citadel. To enter, you will also need to show your passport, entrance ticket, and ISIC card if you have one. You will then proceed with your guide on a 2-hour tour, visiting the different ruins and temples. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the city and take all the photographs you desire.

    After enjoying the magnificent city of the Incas, you will use the bus ticket to descend to Aguas Calientes and then take the train back to Cusco via Ollantaytambo. The «Expedition Train» departs at 6:30 p.m. and arrives in Ollantaytambo after 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, there will be a bus waiting to take you back to Cusco. Your journey will conclude around 10:30 p.m.

    For the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu 4D/3N, the itinerary and campsites are subject to changes depending on the timing of the reservation. They may also vary depending on the weather or the health condition of the hikers. The train (to and from Ollantaytambo) included in each tour is the Expedition Service. The train times are only confirmed closer to the hiking date. Therefore, if you join a group later, we cannot guarantee that you will travel on the same trains as the rest of the group. Train times are also subject to changes depending on the train company’s schedule or availability.
